It's been reported by the Federation of Youth Groups that the number of school children whose parents use tutors has almost than doubled than the 1996 figures. From a survey of Primary Five to Form Seven students conducted by the group, 56.7% of them have taken tutorial classes. It's a big leap from the 34% who said so in 1996. Most of parents hire tutors to teach English and followed by Math subjects. A fifth of these private lessons cost between HK$1,000 and HK$1,500.
No wonder ads about superstar tutors have been proliferating in bus bodies or MTR stations because of the apparent demand in the market. Parents are very eager to make their kids excel in class (exam topnotchers often appear in primetime news). Another possible reason is that English and Math proficiency of local teachers aren't up to par so they decided to take the matter on their own. Hence the increase of private tutorial lessons.

Hello Elmer,
I started viewing your bolg only a few weeks ago. I am leaving HK after having spent 9 wonderful years here, and I wanted to read about this city even after my departure. Your blog gives me an opportunity to stay in touch from my new location...... Here is my thank you to HK.......
"I would like to say a few words before I take my leave…………
First, I want to thank the city of Hong Kong. We’ve spent the last 9 years here. It seems like it’s just been 9 weeks. Hong Kong works, it charms, it fascinates, it attracts, it invites, it is mysterious, it is progressive, it is steeped in culture……. It is simply magnetic. This thank you is for you – all the people of Hong Kong. You have excelled in not only creating this truly valuable asset, but also in maintaining it, constantly changing it, forever improving it. Our experience here has been nothing but incredible."
And then I go on to thank my friends, and colleagues.
All the best to you in your new assignment.
Best Regards
