The news is out that Cathay Pacific and Dragonair passenger numbers have dipped for the first time since 2003 when SARS was a resident term in daily headlines.According to statistics released yesterday, the two Hong Kong-based airlines carried 1,878,080 passengers last month, 0.7 percent fewer than in September of last year.
Their load factor, which measures how much of an airline's passenger carrying capacity is being used, declined by 6.7 percentage points to 72.3 percent. This means that on average we see more vacant seats and shorter lines.
There are many factors on such lower number of passengers such as the recent weather disturbances but possibly the effects of slowing world economy has caught up with the aviation industry like it did during SARS era of 2003.
The question I have in mind: does recession do good to slow down global warming through fewer airplanes that fly? OR when gas prices are high enough to force car owners to keep their cars in the garage and use public transport?
